Reflection Questions
Our nation’s past is complex and often provokes reflection, especially as we look to the future.
- What is a monument or memorial?
- Why are monuments and memorials built?
- Who can suggest an idea for a new monument or memorial?
- Why might the location of a memorial be just as important as its design?
- How do designers try to influence visitors' experiences and understanding through memorial design?
- Should every historically important event receive a memorial? Why or why not?
- In what ways can the design of a memorial communicate historical meaning without using words?
- Why is public input an important part of the memorial design process?
- To what extent should monuments reflect national achievements versus national struggles?
- If you were proposing a new memorial today, what would it commemorate, and how would you justify its importance to future generations?
