Over the last century, aircraft have become increasingly more common in celebratory events as flyovers; whether at the Nationals game nearby, a parade on the Mall, or it is otherwise a holiday, one of the more common sights you will see on the Mall will be the roar of plane and helicopter engines!

A military flyover is when military aircraft—such as jets, helicopters, or, in earlier times, blimps—fly in formation over a specific location as part of a ceremony, commemoration, or special event. These flights are usually carefully planned and coordinated with ground events, like parades, memorial ceremonies, or national celebrations.

On and around the National Mall, military aircraft have been used in symbolic ways. Below are images from the fly overs on the National Mall.

Reflection Questions

High school learners: Our nation’s past is complex and often provokes reflection, especially as we look to the future.

Here are a few questions to inspire deeper thinking:

  1. Why do you think the military sometimes includes aircraft flyovers as part of national ceremonies or events?
  2. How might a flyover change the mood or tone of a ceremony on the National Mall?
  3. What might a flyover communicate about the relationship between the military and national memorials on the Mall?
